“What is the difference between a Conservatory and an Orangery?” is a question that we get asked a lot and, in fairness, the differences can be very minor. In general terms an Orangery will tend to have a more solid appearance than a Conservatory with more walls and less glazing and the glazed roof area would be smaller and may consist of a separate lantern on a flat roof. With the advancements in technology, a popular choice is a cross between the two, with a Conservatory with some additional features both internally and externally that give the appearance of an Orangery (like the one opposite), but at a much lower cost than a full extension. Orangery Extensions (flat-roofed extensions with either Flat Rooflights or Lantern Rooflights, would require both Planning and Building Bye-Law approval as they are classed as an extension. You will need to approach an Architect and Engineer initially to produce the design and calculations required.
